Not much is known about the early history of the Gilchrist brothers of Etal, Northumberland. They moved to Berwick-on-Tweed, where the elder brother settled, whereas the two younger brothers’ connection with the shipping industry brought them to Hull. They settled in the city and most of their children were born there, though it seems likely that Thomas’s elder daughters and sons were born in Berwick-on-Tweed. Ann Gilchrist (c1817-1876) was the grandmother of Frederick Pickering (1852-1930).
